SQL Database Intro by Keith Oustalet

This section represents the starting point for learning how to create and maintain databases from within Browser-based Applications.

Beginners will find here the core material needed to understand more advanced concepts discussed in other or later sections where we begin working with heitml Database Application Components which simplify many of the common chores involved with Database Programming.

Advanced Users (those already familiar with CGI Scripts and Forms Processing) will also find a wealth of valuable information here, because this is where old techniques will be exchanged for new and better ones. Scripting Languages suffer from a multitude of deficiencies, particularly in that they force you to learn a new (i.e. non-HTML) Syntax. heitml makes Scripting Languages obsolete, because heitml combines the features of HTML, Scripting Languages, and full-featured Programming Languages into a single integrated environment, and all of this is accomplished while preserving the friendly, easy to learn HTML Syntax that you already know.

If you are tempted to skip this section and move on to others, you should note that foundation material such as you will find here is presented with a purpose. If you skip it, you will most assuredly find holes in your knowledge later on that force you to come back here or, failing that, the quality of your applications will surely suffer, particularly in your ability to customize them and create tricks and shortcuts of your own.

Even a brief reading of this material by advanced Users and experienced CGI professionals will strengthen the foundation of your knowledge of heitml programming. It is further recommended that all Users, beginner and advanced alike, refer to the General Design page of the Language Reference for additional background material that, although conceptual in nature rather than practical as is found in this Language Guide, will also enhance your appreciation and understanding of the design goals upon which heitml is based.
